Our Priorities

Our Local Development Strategy describes what we plan to achieve by 2013. For projects to be considered they should align with the priorities set out in the Strategy. The Waveney Valley priorities for the next three years are set out below;

Modernisation and diversification of farming

Modernise by:

  • increasing energy efficiency on farms through the use of new technologies to improve economic and environmental performance
  • improving product quality through advanced crop storage
  • utilisation of new technology to enhance nutrient management with obvious ecological benefits

Diversify into:

  • alternative approaches to farming such as Care Farming
  • non-food crops targeting emerging markets
  • sustainable tourism supporting farmers to future proof their businesses

Supporting businesses to meet the challenges facing the rural economy

  • A collaborative approach between market towns to ensure benefits individually and collectively
  • Co-ordinated responses between businesses to combat the recession e.g. utilisation of empty shops
  • Supporting niche markets and businesses embracing new technology that provides a catalyst for increased economic activity
  • Addressing local gaps in basic services

Encouraging green and sustainable tourism

  • Supporting the development of a Waveney Valley tourism offer that delivers green credentials and links with local businesses
  • Exploiting the uniqueness of the area in terms of its character and network of attractions through the promotion of trails
  • Coherently linking and collating information through partnership working
  • Promoting sustainable transport schemes using horses, bicycles, buses and canoes

Developing and promoting local supply chains

  • Developing and promoting local supply chains that improve the understanding of the rural environment whilst creating real economic opportunities for land based businesses
  • Promoting local food, reducing food miles and connecting people to their local environment through ‘farm to fork’ type initiatives
  • Adding value and improving supply chains for local livestock
